Viva Mexico!

So we walked over to Mexico for a couple hours on Sunday afternoon. We drove from Big Bend National Park to Del Rio. We parked Geronimo at a flea market and walked over a bridge over the Rio Grande into Ciudad Acuna. No one even stopped us or looked at our passports.

We had a fine time walking the streets and taking in the local flavor. A mariachi band comprised of a father and his two sons played “La Bamba” for us, the younger son belting it out and the older son nailing the guitar solo. It was fabulous! Then we ducked into a restaurant for some tacitos and orange soda. It was delicious! Being the proud owners of a rooster clock, we also enjoyed all the pictures of gallos (roosters) on the wall. After lunch we walked back to the border, stopping to chat with a man selling pit bull puppies. I told him I couldn’t get one because we had to cross back to the U.S.A. and because they’re illegal in Ontario. I did get to pet the puppies though, and they were very cute.

So we walked back over the Rio Grande, pausing to watch a soccer game through the chain-link fence. We had to wait at the immigration office, but that’s to be expected when one is coming into the U.S.A. Overall, it was a great little trip into Mexico.

  1. Read and enjoyed your blog account about Acuna. Planning a trip there in March. If I may ask, what are your impressions of the safety for visitors in Acuna? Is it as wild as the media make Juarez out to be? sjohn317@cox.net
